  • 4 c. unsifted all-purpose flour (lightly spooned into cups)
  • 1 Tbsp. sugar
  • 2 tsp. salt
  • 1 3/4 c. solid vegetable shortening (don't use lard, margarine is better)
  • 1 Tbsp. vinegar (either white or cider)
  • 1 large egg

    Put first 3 ingredients in a large bowl and mix well with a fork.

    Add shortening and mix well with fork until crumbly.

    In a small bowl, beat 1/2 cup water, vinegar and egg with a fork. Combine the two mixtures, stirring until all ingredients are moist.

    Divide dough in 5 portions and shape each portion in a flat round patty ready for rolling.
