Ingredients

  • 1 pkg. dry yeast
  • 2 Tbsp. very warm water
  • 5 c. all-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp. baking soda
  • 3 tsp. baking powder
  • 2 Tbsp. sugar
  • 1 1/2 tsp. salt
  • 1 c. Crisco shortening
  • 2 c. buttermilk
  • 1/4 c. melted butter

Directions

    Dissolve yeast in warm water and set aside. Sift dry ingredients together and add yeast.

    Cut in shortening and then add buttermilk.

    Turn out dough onto a floured board and knead for 1 or 2 minutes.

    Roll out dough to 1/2-inch thick and cut into biscuits.

    Place biscuits on an ungreased baking sheet, let rise 10 to 15 minutes, then brush with butter and bake in a 400° oven for 12 to 15 minutes.

    Makes 2 1/2 dozen.
