- 1 pkg. active dry yeast
- 2 Tbsp. warm water
- 5 c. flour, sifted
- 1 tsp. baking soda
- 1 Tbsp. baking powder
- 4 Tbsp. sugar
- 1 tsp. salt
- 1 c. vegetable shortening
- 1 1/2 to 2 c. buttermilk
- melted butter
Directions

1Preheat oven to 400°.

2Dissolve yeast in water.

3Sift flour with other dry ingredients.

4Cut in shortening.

5Add buttermilk, a little at a time, and yeast mixture to flour mixture.

6Combine well, adding more buttermilk or flour as necessary, to make a soft, yet workable dough.

7Knead gently for a few minutes on a floured board.

8Roll out to 1/2-inch thickness.

9Cut with biscuit cutter. Brush with melted butter.

10Place on lightly greased baking pan and bake 12 to 15 minutes.

11Dough keeps several days in refrigerator.
