Ingredients

  • 1 pkg. dry yeast or 1 cake
  • 1/2 c. warm water
  • 5 c. sifted flour (plain)
  • 1 tsp. baking soda
  • 3 tsp. baking powder
  • 1 Tbsp. salt
  • 3 Tbsp. sugar
  • 3/4 c. vegetable shortening
  • 2 c. buttermilk

Directions

    Dissolve yeast in warm water.

    Sift all dry ingredients together a couple of times in large bowl.

    Cut in shortening.

    Add buttermilk and yeast mixture; work dough only until well moistened.

    Cover and refrigerate to use as needed.

    Bake in a 400° oven until nicely browned, about 12 minutes.

    Keeps for a full week in refrigerator.
