Ingredients

  • 1 pkg. dry yeast
  • 2 Tbsp. very warm water
  • 5 c. all-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp. soda
  • 3 tsp. baking powder
  • 2 Tbsp. sugar
  • 1 1/2 tsp. salt
  • 2 c. buttermilk
  • 1 c. vegetable shortening
  • melted butter

Directions

    Dissolve yeast in warm water.

    Sift dry ingredients into a large bowl; cut in shortening with a pastry blender.

    Add buttermilk and yeast mixture; stir until thoroughly moistened. Turn dough out onto floured board and knead 1 or 2 minutes.

    (No rising is required.)

    Roll dough out to 1/2-inch thickness and cut with a 2-inch biscuit cutter.

    Place on ungreased baking sheet; brush with melted butter and bake at 400° for 12 to 15 minutes or until lightly browned.
