  • 5 to 6 c. tart apples
  • 1 c. sugar (part brown)
  • 1 tsp. cinnamon
  • 1/2 tsp. nutmeg
  • 1/4 tsp. salt
  • lemon juice (optional)

Directions

    Pare apples; slice into bowl.

    Mix spices and sugar.

    Combine with sliced apples.

    Add lemon juice if apples are not tart enough.

    Arrange in unbaked 9-inch pie shell.

    Put on top crust; seal around edge and either prick with fork or cut design with sharp knife in top crust, to allow steam to escape.

    Preheat oven to 450°.

    Bake pie for 15 minutes, then reduce heat to 350° and bake 30 minutes longer, or until crust is brown.
