  • 1 lb. phyllo pastry sheets
  • 1 1/2 c. butter, melted
  • 1 lb. nuts, finely chopped
  • 5 Tbsp. sugar
  • 3 1/2 c. water
  • 1 c. sugar
  • 3/4 c. honey
  • 1 tsp. lemon juice

Directions

    Place sheets of phyllo pastry in 13 x 9 x 2-inch pan, brushing each second sheet with melted butter.

    When 10 sheets are in place, combine nuts and sugar; spread 1/2 over top sheet.

    Place another 5 sheets of buttered phyllo on top and sprinkle with nut mixture. Repeat and end with buttered phyllo sheets.

    With sharp knife, cut baklava into diamond shaped pieces.

    Bake at 350° for 30 minutes. Reduce temperature to 300° and bake 45 minutes more.

    Cool and pour hot syrup over top.

    Serves 24.
