(2 sticks) sweet butter; 1 c. granulated sugar; 2 eggs; 1 c. mashed ripe bananas; 1 3/4 c. unbleached all-purpose flour; 1/2 tsp. salt; 2/3 tsp. baking soda; 5 Tbsp. buttermilk; 1 tsp. vanilla extract; Cream Cheese Frosting (recipe follows); 1 or 2 medium size firm, but ripe bananas, sliced; 1 1/2 c. walnuts

Preheat oven to 350°. Grease and flour two 9-inch layer cake pans.

Cream butter and sugar together until light and fluffy. Add eggs, one at a time, beating well after each addition. Add 1 cup of mashed bananas, mixing thoroughly.
