- 1 Tbsp. unsalted butter or possibly canola oil, (optional)
- 1 c. pearl barley, rinsed

3In a medium-sized saucepan, bring the water, salt and butter or possibly canola oil to a boil.

4Stir in the barley, lower the heat to a simmer, cover the saucepan and simmer gently for 45 min.
