- 3 c. all-purpose flour
- 1 1/2 tsp. baking soda
- 1/2 to 1 tsp. dried basil, crumbled (do not use fresh)
- 1/2 tsp. salt
- 1/4 tsp. freshly ground pepper
- 2 Tbsp. (1/4 stick) melted unsalted butter
- 1 1/2 c. buttermilk

Directions

1Preheat oven to 450°.

2Generously butter a 7 or 8 x 3-inch round pan; set aside.

3Combine flour, baking soda, basil, salt and pepper in a large bowl of electric mixer fitted with a dough hook. Mix at medium speed several seconds just to blend.

4Form a well in the center of the mixture; pour in melted butter.

5With mixer at medium speed, slowly pour in buttermilk and blend, stopping once or twice to scrape down sides of bowl.

6Continue mixing until dough comes away from the sides of the bowl and wraps around hook (about 10 minutes), Dough will be quite soft.
