  • 4 slices bread
  • 3 1/2 c. milk
  • 4 Tbsp. sugar
  • 4 eggs, separated
  • 1 Tbsp. vanilla
  • pinch of salt
  • raisins (about a c., more if your family likes them a lot)
  • 1/2 stick butter or oleo
  • 8 Tbsp. sugar

    Break bread into ovenproof dish that has at least 1 1/2-quart capacity.

    Soften bread with small amount of milk.

    Beat 4 tablespoons of sugar and egg yolks.

    Add remaining milk; stir well.

    Add vanilla and salt.

    Pour milk mixture over bread.

    Fold in raisins.

    Dot with butter.

    Place dish in pan of water.

    Bake at 300° for 40 to 50 minutes, or until silver knife inserted comes out clean.
