Ingredients

  • 2 1/2 c. all-purpose flour
  • 1 c. chopped nuts
  • 1/2 c. granulated sugar
  • 1/2 c. packed brown sugar
  • 1/4 c. shortening
  • 1 c. buttermilk
  • 1/4 c. maraschino cherry juice
  • 3 tsp. baking powder
  • 1 tsp. salt
  • 1/2 tsp. baking soda
  • 2 eggs
  • 1/2 c. maraschino cherries, chopped and drained

Directions

    Beat all ingredients except maraschino cherries in large bowl on low speed 15 seconds.

    Beat on medium speed 30 seconds, scraping bowl constantly.

    Stir in maraschino cherries.

    Pour into greased pan and bake at 350° for 70 minutes or until toothpick inserted in center comes out clean.

    Immediately loosen sides of loaf from pan and remove it onto a wire rack.

    Cool completely before slicing.

    Can wrap and freeze bread up to 3 months.
