- 2 (16 oz.) cans tomatoes, chopped
- 4 c. water
- 4 lb. ground beef
- 2 large onions, diced
- 4 Tbsp. shortening
- 3 cloves garlic, minced
- 4 bay leaves
- 2 tsp. oregano
- 4 tsp. ground cumin
- 2 tsp. salt or to taste
- 6 Tbsp. chili powder
- 2 tsp. parsley flakes
- cayenne or black pepper to taste
- 2 tsp. sugar
- 3 to 5 Tbsp. flour
- cold water or tomato juice
Directions

1Brown beef and onions in shortening.

2Add tomatoes, garlic, bay leaves, oregano, cumin, salt, chili powder, sugar and pepper. Bring to a boil and reduce heat to simmer.

3Cook, covered, stirring occasionally for 2 1/2 to 3 hours.

4Add water if chili gets too thick during cooking.

5Add parsley 30 minutes before chili is ready.

6Mix flour with cold water or tomato juice to form a paste and add to chili to thicken.

7Stir thoroughly.
