Chocolate Brownies

8 ingredients
11 steps

Ingredients

  • 4 ounces good-quality (bittersweet or semisweet) dark chocolate (70% cocoa solids), broken into small pieces
  • 1/2 cup butter
  • 4 large eggs, preferably free-range or organic
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 3/4 cup self-raising flour
  • Salt
  • 4 ounces shelled walnuts
  • Powdered sugar, for dusting

Directions

  1. 1
Preheat the oven to 375 degrees F.
  2. 2
Grease an 8-inch square baking pan with a little butter, then cut a square of wax paper to fit neatly in the bottom.
  3. 3
Melt the chocolate and butter in a glass bowl over a pan of simmering water.
  4. 4
Remove from the heat and set aside.
  5. 5
Mix the eggs, sugar, flour and salt together in a bowl.
  6. 6
Add the melted chocolate and butter mixture.
  7. 7
    Sprinkle in the walnuts.
  8. 8
Stir and fold together, being careful not to over-mix.
  9. 9
Spread evenly into the baking pan and bake on the middle shelf of the oven for 15 to 18 minutes, or until a crust has formed but they are still a bit wobbly (you don't want them to be really cooked through like a cake).
  10. 10
Allow the brownies to cool slightly and then cut into squares.
  11. 11
Serve with powdered sugar dusted over the top.
