- 1 1/2 sq. chocolate or 3 Tbsp. cocoa
- 2 c. milk
- 1 c. sugar
- 1 Tbsp. butter
- 1/2 tsp. salt
- 3 Tbsp. cornstarch
- 2 eggs, separated
- 1 tsp. vanilla
- 1/4 tsp. cream of tartar
- 1/4 c. sugar
- 1 pie shell
Directions

1Melt chocolate in double boiler.

2Add 1 1/2 cups milk and bring to boiling point.

3Combine sugar, salt and cornstarch.

4Add remaining milk to make a smooth paste.

5Add paste to milk and cook until thickened.

6Beat egg yolks.

7Pour a small amount of hot mixture over yolks before adding them to milk.

8Cook 2 minutes. Remove from heat and add butter and vanilla.

9Cook until lukewarm and pour into baked pie shell.

10Cover with meringue of egg whites, cream of tartar and 1/4 cup sugar.

11Bake at 350° until meringue is browned.
