- 2 c. sugar
- 4 eggs, separated
- 1 bar German chocolate
- 1 c. buttermilk
- 1 tsp. vanilla
- 1 c. shortening
- 1/2 c. boiling water
- 2 1/2 c. cake flour
- 1 tsp. soda
- dash of salt
Directions

1Preheat oven to 350°.

2Cream shortening and sugar.

3Add egg yolks, one at a time.

4Melt chocolate in boiling water; add to creamed mixture.

5Dissolve soda in 1/4 cup milk.

6Alternately add flour and milk to first mixture.

7Add vanilla and salt.
-
8Fold in stiffly beaten egg whites.

9Makes 6 layers.

10Bake in 350° oven for 30 minutes.

11Make two kinds of frosting.
