- 1/2 c. shortening
- 1/2 c. margarine
- 2 c. sugar
- 5 eggs, separated
- 1 c. buttermilk or sour milk
- 1 tsp. baking soda
- 2 c. flour
- 1 tsp. vanilla
- 1 2/3 c. coconut
Directions

1Cream shortening and margarine together, adding sugar gradually.

2Beat until creamy, then add egg yolks.

3Add baking soda to buttermilk and add alternately with the flour.

4Beat egg whites stiff and fold into batter, adding vanilla and coconut at the same time.

5Bake in three 8 or 9-inch greased and floured pans at 350° for 30 minutes.
