- 2 1/3 c. sifted flour
- 2 c. sugar
- 2 tsp. baking soda
- 3/4 tsp. salt
- 1 tsp. cinnamon
- 1/4 tsp. nutmeg
- 1/4 tsp. ground cloves
- 4 c. diced pared apples (about 1 1/2 lb.)
- 1/2 c. shortening (1 stick margarine)
- 1/2 c. chopped walnuts
- 2 eggs, lightly beaten
Directions

1Into large bowl of electric mixer, sift together flour, sugar, baking soda, salt and spices.

2Add apples, shortening, nuts and eggs.

3Beat until well mixed.

4Turn into greased and floured round spring-form pan or divide into 2 (9-inch) layer cake pans.

5Bake in preheated 325° oven for 45 minutes or until cake tests done.

6Cool. Remove from pans.

7Frost with caramel frosting, if desired.
