Ingredients

  • 1 c. cracked wheat
  • 1 c. cold water
  • 1 c. milk
  • 2 Tbsp. shortening
  • 1 Tbsp. salt
  • 1/4 c. molasses
  • 1 1/2 pkg. yeast
  • 1/2 c. warm water
  • 6 to 7 c. flour

Directions

    Soak cracked wheat in cold water overnight.

    Mix together the milk, shortening, salt and molasses.

    Add soaked cracked wheat. Dissolve yeast in the warm water; add to other ingredients.

    Add half the flour and beat 2 minutes.

    Add remaining flour to make stiff dough.

    Knead 10 minutes.

    Grease dough; cover and let rise until double in size.

    Divide into 2 loaves.

    Let rise again. Bake at 375° for 10 minutes, then at 350° for 30 to 35 minutes.
