- 4 tablespoons (1/2 stick) butter (about), room temperature
- 8 thin white sandwich bread slices, crusts removed
- 8 thin Gruyere or Swiss cheese slices
- 4 ham slices
Directions

1Lightly butter 1 side of each bread slice.

2Place 1 cheese slice on buttered side of each of 4 bread slices.

3Top with ham slice and another cheese slice.

4Close sandwiches with remaining bread slices, buttered side in.

5Melt 2 tablespoons butter in heavy large skillet over medium-low heat.

6Add sandwiches in batches and cook until golden brown, adding more butter as necessary, about 2 minutes per side.

7Serve immediately.
