Ingredients

  • 1 c. chopped dates
  • 1/2 c. sugar
  • 1/4 c. butter (1/2 stick)
  • 3/4 c. boiling water
  • 1 Tbsp. rum (optional)
  • 1 egg, beaten
  • 1 tsp. baking soda
  • 1 3/4 c. flour
  • 1/2 c. chopped nuts (optional)

Directions

    Mix in large bowl dates, sugar, butter and water.

    Stir until butter melts.

    Cool.

    Stir in the egg, soda, flour, nuts and rum. Put in a buttered loaf pan.

    Bake 50 minutes or until toothpick comes out clean in a 350° oven.

    For a sweeter bread, double nuts, rum and sugar.

    Great served with cream cheese.

    Slices best when allowed to sit overnight.
