  • 1 lb. dates, cut up
  • 1 lb. raisins, cut up
  • 6 c. boiling water
  • 8 tsp. bicarbonate of soda
  • 2 lb. chopped walnuts
  • 6 c. sugar
  • 9 Tbsp. butter
  • 8 eggs
  • 4 tsp. vanilla
  • 12 c. flour

Directions

    Pour water over dates and raisins.

    Melt butter.

    Stir in eggs, sugar and vanilla.

    Add flour and soda alternately with dates, raisins and nuts.

    Fill greased 1-pound coffee cans 1/2 to 2/3 full.

    Bake at 350° approximately 1 1/2 hours.

    Makes 8 to 9 (1-pound) cans.
