  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 12 teaspoon baking powder
  • 14 teaspoon salt
  • 13 cup butter or 13 cup margarine
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon freshly grated fresh lemon rind
  • 8 ounces pitted dates, quartered
  • 12 cup coarsely chopped walnuts
  • 12 tablespoon sugar

Directions

    Combine flour, baking powder and salt.

    Set aside.

    Grease and flour a 9-inch square baking pan and preheat oven to 350F Cream butter and sugar until light and fluffy.

    Stir in eggs and vanilla until well blended.

    Stir in the flour mixture.

    Add the peel, dates, and nuts.

    Put batter in baking dish, sprinkle with 1/2 tablespoons sugar, and bake until golden brown, 25-30 minutes.
