- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- 12 teaspoon baking powder
- 14 teaspoon salt
- 13 cup butter or 13 cup margarine
- 1 cup sugar
- 2 large eggs
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1 teaspoon freshly grated fresh lemon rind
- 8 ounces pitted dates, quartered
- 12 cup coarsely chopped walnuts
- 12 tablespoon sugar
Directions

1Combine flour, baking powder and salt.

3Grease and flour a 9-inch square baking pan and preheat oven to 350F Cream butter and sugar until light and fluffy.

4Stir in eggs and vanilla until well blended.

5Stir in the flour mixture.

6Add the peel, dates, and nuts.

7Put batter in baking dish, sprinkle with 1/2 tablespoons sugar, and bake until golden brown, 25-30 minutes.

8Cool in pan on a rack.

9Cut in squares while still warm.
