  • 1 1/2 c. boiling water
  • 3/4 c. shortening
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 1/2 c. white sugar
  • 2 1/2 c. flour
  • 1 1/2 tsp. vanilla
  • 3/4 tsp. salt
  • 1 1/2 tsp. soda
  • 3/4 c. chopped nuts

    Cover dates with boiling water.

    Cool to lukewarm.

    Thoroughly cream shortening and sugar.

    Add eggs and vanilla.

    Beat well. Add date mixture, then sifted dry ingredients.

    Bake for 35 to 40 minutes at 350° in 9 x 13 x 2-inch well-greased and floured pan.
