- 3/4 c. chopped nuts
- 1 c. cut up pitted dates
- 1 1/2 tsp. baking soda
- 1/2 tsp. salt
- 2 Tbsp. shortening
- 3/4 c. boiling water
- 2 eggs
- 1 tsp. vanilla
- 1 c. granulated sugar
- 1 1/2 c. flour
Directions

1Mix first 4 ingredients with a fork; add shortening and water. Let stand 20 minutes; heat oven to 350°.

2Beat eggs with fork, add vanilla, sugar and flour, beating with fork.

3Add date mixture, mixing to just blend.

4Bake 1 hour and 5 minutes or until done.

5Makes 1 loaf.
