Ingredients

  • 1 yeast cake
  • 1 Tbsp. water (warm)
  • 1/2 c. scalded milk
  • 1 c. water
  • 1 tsp. salt
  • 1 tsp. sugar
  • 3 Tbsp. shortening
  • 4 c. flour

Directions

    Dissolve yeast in warm water.

    Cool scalded milk to lukewarm. Add 1 cup water, salt, sugar, yeast and 2 cups flour.

    Beat well. Let rise, covered, until doubled in bulk.

    Add slightly softened shortening and remaining flour.

    Beat and knead thoroughly.

    Let rise again until double in bulk.

    Place on floured board or use corn meal.

    Flatten to 3/4-inch thickness and cut with 2 1/2-inch cutter.

    Bake 15 minutes on hot griddle (not buttered) turning once or twice.
