French Onion Bread

- 2 pkg. active dry yeast
- 4 Tbsp. sugar
- 1 envelope instant dry onion soup mix
- 3 Tbsp. shortening
- 2 1/4 c. warm water
- 5 to 6 c. flour
Directions

1Mix yeast, sugar and 2 cups flour.

2Mix one of the cups of water heated to hot with soup mix.

3Let stand until cool; add rest of water.

4Stir in the shortening until melted.

5Add to this the flour mixture.

6Beat 2 minutes, adding gradually about 3 1/2 cups flour or until very stiff dough.

7Knead until smooth.

8Put in a greased bowl; turn to grease top.

9Cover; let rise in warm place until double, about 30 minutes.
