  • 2 c. sugar
  • 1/2 c. boiling water
  • 1 bar German sweet chocolate
  • 1 tsp. vanilla
  • 1 tsp. soda
  • 2 1/2 c. flour
  • 1 c. shortening or 2 sticks butter
  • 4 eggs
  • pinch of salt
  • 1 c. buttermilk

Directions

    Cream butter and sugar; add one egg yolk at a time.

    Beat; dissolve chocolate in boiling water, then add to mixture flour and milk alternately.

    Add soda to last 1/3 cup milk, then add to mixture.

    Add vanilla and salt, then fold in stiffly beaten egg whites.

    Bake in greased pans at 350° for 30 minutes.
