  • 3/4 c. shortening
  • 1 c. sugar
  • 1/2 c. dark molasses
  • 1 egg
  • 1 tsp. soda
  • 2 c. flour
  • 1/2 tsp. cloves
  • 1/2 tsp. ginger
  • 1 tsp. cinnamon
  • 1/2 tsp. salt

    Melt shortening and sugar.

    Add molasses and egg.

    (Cool enough to not cook egg.)

    Beat until well mixed.

    Add other ingredients.

    Chill at least 2 hours or overnight.

    Make 1-inch balls.

    Roll in sugar.

    Bake on greased baking sheet for 8 to 10 minutes, until cracks appear on top, at 375°.
