- 1 stick (1/2 c.) butter
- 1/2 c. granulated sugar
- 1 egg, beaten
- 2 1/2 c. sifted flour
- 1 1/2 tsp. soda
- 1 tsp. cinnamon
- 1 tsp. ginger
- 1/2 tsp. cloves
- 1/2 tsp. salt
- 1 c. molasses (do not use blackstrap molasses)
- 1 c. hot water

1Cream butter real well.

2Add sugar and cream.

3Add beaten egg. Measure and sift dry ingredients.

4Set aside.

5Combine molasses and hot water.

6Add dry ingredients to first mixture alternately with liquid, a small amount at a time, and beat after each addition until smooth.
