- 2 1/2 c. flour
- 1 tsp. cinnamon
- 1/2 tsp. ground cloves
- 1 1/2 tsp. baking soda
- 1 tsp. ginger
- 3/4 tsp. salt
- 1/2 c. butter or margarine (1 stick)
- 1/2 c. sugar
- 1 egg
- 1 c. molasses
- 1 c. hot water
Directions

1Sift together the first 6 ingredients.

2In a large electric mixer bowl at medium speed, mix the butter and sugar.

3Add the egg; continue beating.

4Add the molasses.

5Mix both mixtures alternately, adding 1 cup of hot water and beating just until smooth.

6Grease a 9 x 9 x 2-inch pan; line the bottom with wax paper.

7Turn mixture into pan.

8Bake at 350° for 50 to 55 minutes.
