  • 1/2 c. shortening
  • 1 egg
  • 1/2 c. molasses
  • 1/2 tsp. salt
  • 1/2 tsp. ginger
  • 1/2 tsp. cinnamon
  • 1/2 c. packed brown sugar
  • 1 1/2 c. flour
  • 3/4 tsp. baking soda
  • 1/2 c. boiling water

Directions

    Beat shortening and sugar until creamy. Add egg and molasses. Beat well. Mix dry ingredients thoroughly in a different bowl. Add to molasses mixture alternately with water. Beat after each addition. Pour batter into a greased 8 x 8 x 2-inch baking pan. Bake at 350° for 35 to 40 minutes. Sprinkle with sugar when done.
