  • 1/2 c. shortening
  • 1/2 c. sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 1/2 c. light molasses
  • 1 1/2 c. flour
  • 3/4 tsp. salt
  • 3/4 tsp. soda
  • 1/2 tsp. ginger
  • 1/2 tsp. cinnamon
  • 1/2 c. boiling water

    Stir shortening to soften.

    Gradually add sugar, creaming until light and fluffy.

    Add the egg and molasses; beat thoroughly.

    Mix together dry ingredients.

    Add to molasses mixture alternately with the boiling water.

    Beat after each addition.

    Bake in greased 8 x 8 x 2-inch pan in moderate oven at 350° for about 35 to 40 minutes.
