  • 3/4 c. shortening
  • 1 c. sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 1/4 c. molasses
  • 2 c. flour
  • 1/4 tsp. nutmeg
  • 1 tsp. cloves
  • 1 tsp. cinnamon
  • 2 tsp. soda
  • 1/2 tsp. ginger

    Sift together dry ingredients.

    Cream shortening and sugar thoroughly.

    Add molasses and egg, beating until light and fluffy. Stir in dry ingredients, mixing well.

    Chill 1 hour.

    Shape into 3/4-inch balls; roll in sugar.

    Arrange on ungreased baking sheet. Bake in moderate oven at 350° for 10 to 12 minutes.
