  • 2 1/2 c. sifted flour
  • 1 1/2 c. sugar
  • 1 tsp. salt
  • 3 tsp. baking powder
  • 1/2 c. soft shortening
  • 1 1/4 c. milk
  • 5 egg yolks
  • 1 tsp. vanilla or lemon flavoring

    Sift flour, sugar, salt and baking powder into large mixing bowl.

    Add shortening and 3/4 cup of milk.

    Beat 2 minutes at medium speed.

    Add egg yolks, flavoring and remaining milk.

    Beat 2 minutes.

    Bake at 350° for 30 to 35 minutes for layers and 35 to 40 minutes in oblong pan until surface springs back when gently touched.
