  • 1 lb Great Northern beans
  • 1 medium head cabbage
  • 2-3 carrots
  • 1-2 onions
  • 1 bone and attached scraps from sprial cut ham
  • 6 whole cloves (more to taste)
  • 12 bay leaves
  • salt to taste
  • 8-12 cups water

    1. Soak beans in water overnight; rinse and pick out any bad beans.

    2. Bring water to boil in large pot. Add ham bone, beans, cloves, and bay leaves. Cook at low boil for one hour

    3. Shred cabbage and carrots and saute in olive oil or butter. Cut onions into large chunks. Add all veggies to pot and cook at low boil for 2 hours.

    4. Add salt to taste; enjoy with warm crusty bread
