Ham With White Beans

Ingredients
- 1/4 - 1/2 teaspoon salt (optional)
- 1/2 tsp sugar
- 1 tbsp granulated garlic powder
- 1 tbsp onion powder
- 1/4 tsp baking soda
- 1/2 tsp pepper
- 1 cup leftover ham, cut into small pieces
- 1 leftover ham bone
- 1/2 lb white beans (like navy beans, northern, or pea)
Directions

1Rinse and clean the beans.

2This recipe doesn't call for soaking the beans, but feel free to do so if that is your preferred method, which will reduce the cooking time by 45 minutes or so.

3Place beans in a pot with the ham bone and cover with water (6 cups or so).

4Add the baking soda, pepper, sugar, garlic and onion.

5Cook over medium heat.

6Partially cover the pot with a lid or use a lid with vents.

7Cook for 1 hour.

8Add the ham (if there was ham on the bone you can remove it now and chop it up, and put the bone back in the pot) and cook for 30 minutes.

9Taste and add salt if desired.

10Cook for another 30 minutes or until the beans are tender.

11Stir occasionally.

12If the beans start getting dry, add hot water to the pot.

13You want a bit of thick liquid left with the beans when done.

14Remove the ham bone before serving.
