  • 1 cup vegetable shortening soft
  • 1 cup sugar granulated
  • 1 cup brown sugar firmly packed
  • 2 large eggs
  • 2 1/2 cups flour, all-purpose
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 1/2 cup buttermilk
  • 1/2 cup raisins, seedless
  • 1/2 cup candied fruit diced
  • 1/2 cup walnuts chopped
  • 1 1/2 cups rolled oats uncooked

    Beat shortening and sugars together until creamy.

    Blend in eggs.

    Sift together flour, soda, salt and spices.

    Add to creamed mixture alternately with buttermilk.

    Stir in fruits, walnuts, and oats.

    Drop by teaspoonfuls onto lightly greased cookie sheets.

    Bake in moderate oven at 350F (180C).
