Ingredients

  • 5 c. flour (I have better results with self-rising)
  • 2 tsp. salt (leave off if using self-rising flour)
  • 1 heaping Tbsp. sugar
  • 3 level Tbsp. shortening
  • 1/2 c. milk, scalded and cooled
  • 1 c. warm water
  • 2 packets Fleischmann's yeast

Directions

    Dissolve the yeast in warm water; add the scalded, cooled milk. Sift 2 1/2 cups flour in bowl; add sugar and salt (if using plain flour).

    Cut in shortening.

    Add the yeast mixture; beat vigorously until smooth and bubbly.

    Add rest of flour, making a firm dough easily handled without sticking.

    Mold as desired.

    Let stand in a warm place until double in bulk, which should be about 30 to 40 minutes.

    Bake in medium oven (400°) for 20 minutes or until brown. Um-Um-m-m-m-m- Good!
