Ingredients

  • 1/2 c. butter or margarine, softened
  • 1 c. packed brown sugar
  • 1 egg, beaten
  • 1/2 tsp. vanilla extract
  • 2 c. all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 tsp. baking soda
  • 1/2 tsp. cream of tartar
  • 1/2 tsp. salt
  • 1 c. chopped walnuts (optional)

Directions

    In a mixing bowl, cream the butter and brown sugar.

    Add egg and vanilla. Beat well. Combine dry ingredients and add to creamed mixture. Stir in nuts, if desired.

    On a lightly floured surface, shape the dough into three 10 x 1-inch rolls. Tightly wrap each roll in wax paper.

    Freeze for at least 12 hours. Cut into 3/8-inch slices and place on greased baking sheets.

    Bake at 350° for 6 to 8 minutes.

    Remove to wire rack and cool. Makes about 7 dozen.
