- 4 c. flour
- 1/4 c. sugar
- 1 tsp. salt
- 1 tsp. baking powder
- 2 Tbsp. caraway seed
- 1/4 c. butter
- 2 c. currants or raisins or both
- 1 1/3 c. buttermilk
- 1 egg
- 1 tsp. baking soda
- 1 beaten egg yolk
Directions

1Preheat oven to 375°.

2Combine flour, sugar, salt, baking powder and caraway seed.

3Cut in butter until consistency of coarse meal.

4Stir in raisins.

5Combine buttermilk, 1 egg and baking soda.

6Stir wet mixture into dry mixture just to moisten. Knead until smooth.

7Shape into ball and place in a greased 9-inch round pan.

8Press to fill pan.

9Cut slashes (+) in center.

10Brush with egg yolk.

11Bake at 375° for 1 hour or until toothpick comes out clean.

12Cool 10 minutes.

13Remove from pan; place on rack.
