  • 1/2 cups 20 Mule Team Borax
  • 1 cup Washing Soda (NOT Baking Soda)

Directions

  1. 1
You will also need a 5-gallon bucket with a lid, and enough water to finish filling the bucket.
  2. 2
Pour the 2 quarts of water into a saucepan.
  3. 3
    Put the heat on low.
  4. 4
Add the grated Fels Naptha soap and let simmer till the soap is melted.
  5. 5
While the soap is melting, fill the bucket half full with warm water.
  6. 6
Add the borax and washing soda.
  7. 7
    Stir well.
  8. 8
When soap is melted, add to the mixture in the bucket and stir.
  9. 9
Finish filling the bucket full with warm water.
  10. 10
Let the mixture set overnight and it will thicken.
  11. 11
In the morning, stir the mixture till well blended.
  12. 12
Use 1/3 to 1/2 cup of the concentrate straight out of the bucket for regular size loads.
  13. 13
You may have to stir the mixture occasionally before use.
  14. 14
For my family, this lasts 3 months.
  15. 15
If you have extra dirty clothes, add a little more concentrate.
  16. 16
The Fels Naptha soap is an old laundry bar and can be used as a spot remover.
  17. 17
This does not lather up or smell fragrant.
  18. 18
You can add fragrance and/or something to make it produce suds if desired.
  19. 19
    It just smells clean.
  20. 20
People have asked about the HE machines.
  21. 21
I am not sure about this as I dont have one, but you dont have to use much per load.
  22. 22
Use old utensils when making this, something that you will not be using for cooking or grating.
