  • nonstick spray coating
  • 1 lb. lean ground turkey or chicken
  • 1 large onion, chopped (1 c.)
  • 1 medium green pepper, chopped
  • 2 (15 oz.) cans low sodium tomato sauce
  • 2 (4 1/2 oz.) jars sliced mushrooms, drained
  • 1 (6 oz.) can Italian tomato paste
  • 2 tsp. dried Italian seasoning (crushed)
  • 2 tsp. fennel seed (crushed)
  • 1 tsp. sugar
  • 1/2 tsp. garlic salt
  • 1/4 tsp. black pepper
  • 1/4 tsp. ground red pepper (optional)
  • 12 oz. spaghetti

Directions

    Spray a 3-quart saucepan with nonstick coating.

    Add ground turkey or chicken, onion and green pepper.

    Cook and stir over medium heat until meat is no longer pink and vegetables are tender.

    Drain.

    Stir in tomato sauce, mushrooms, tomato paste, seasoning, fennel seed, sugar, garlic salt, black pepper and if desired, add ground red pepper into meat mixture.

    Bring to boil; reduce heat.

    Cover and simmer 30 minutes.
