  • 1 c. shortening
  • 2 c. sugar
  • 1 tsp. cloves
  • 1 tsp. cinnamon
  • 1 tsp. nutmeg
  • 1 tsp. allspice
  • 1 c. sweet milk
  • 8 egg whites (unbeaten)
  • 4 c. sifted flour
  • 1 Tbsp. baking powder
  • 1/4 lb. candied cherries
  • 1 c. nuts
  • 1 lb. raisins
  • 1/2 lb. currants
  • 1/2 lb. citron

    Cream sugar and shortening.

    Add spices, milk and egg whites; mix well.

    Sift flour and baking powder; add fruit and nuts to flour mixture.

    Stir into creamed mixture; blend well.

    Pour into 5 greased and floured 8-inch round pans.

    Bake in slow oven, 325° for 40 minutes or until cakes spring back when lightly touched with finger.
