  • 1 1/2 c. dates, sliced
  • 1 c. raisins
  • 2/3 c. butter
  • 1 1/4 c. dark brown sugar
  • 1/4 c. dark molasses
  • 1 1/2 c. hot water
  • 2 eggs
  • 1/2 c. orange juice
  • 1 1/2 c. cherries
  • 2 c. chopped nuts
  • 3 c. flour
  • 1/2 tsp. cinnamon
  • 1/2 tsp. nutmeg
  • 1 tsp. baking powder
  • 1 tsp. salt

    Boil first 6 ingredients gently for 3 minutes.

    Cool in a large bowl.

    Beat in eggs; add orange juice, cherries and nuts.

    Sift remaining ingredients.

    Add gradually to fruit mixture.

    Makes three 7 x 3-inch pans or two 2 1/2 x 5-inch pans.

    Bake in slow oven at 275° for approximately 1 hour, depending on pans used.
