- 3/4 c. butter or margarine, softened
- 2 c. white sugar
- 4 eggs
- 3 c. all-purpose flour
- 2 tsp. nutmeg
- 1 1/2 tsp. baking powder
- 1 1/2 tsp. baking soda
- 3/4 tsp. salt
- 1 1/2 c. buttermilk
- 1 tsp. vanilla extract
Directions

1Cream butter and sugar until light and fluffy.

2Add eggs, one at a time, beating well after each addition.

3Sift together dry ingredients; add to creamed mixture alternately with buttermilk, beginning and ending with flour, beating well after each addition. Stir in vanilla extract.

4Pour into three greased and floured 9-inch round cake pans.

5Bake at 350° for 25 to 30 minutes or until cake tests done.

6Cool in pans on rack 10 minutes.

7Turn out of pans onto rack and cool completely.
