- 2 Tbsp. shortening
- 2 lb. cubed chuck
- 1 large onion
- 1 clove garlic (optional)
- 4 c. boiling water
- 1 Tbsp. salt
- 1 Tbsp. lemon juice
- 1 tsp. sugar
- 1 tsp. Worcestershire sauce
- 1/2 tsp. paprika
- 2 bay leaves
- 1/2 tsp. pepper
- 6 carrots
- 6 potatoes
- 1/2 c. cold water
- 1/4 c. flour
Directions

1Heat shortening in Dutch oven or 6-quart pot.

2Add beef; brown 20 minutes.

3Add remaining ingredients except for potatoes, carrots, cold water and flour.

4Cook over low heat for 2 hours. Then add vegetables and simmer until tender.
