Onion Casserole

Ingredients

  • 9 to 10 medium onions, thinly sliced
  • 1 Tbsp. salt
  • 4 to 5 slices buttered toast, crust removed (preferably Pepperidge Farm)
  • 1/2 lb. American cheese, grated
  • 1 egg
  • 1 c. milk
  • 1 tsp. salt
  • 1/4 tsp. pepper
  • 1 tsp. celery seed

Directions

    Butter a flat 2-quart baking dish.

    Boil onions in salted water to cover until just tender, about 10 minutes.

    Drain.

    Line baking dish with toast.

    Cover with a layer of onions and cheese. Repeat layers of toast, onions and cheese.

    Beat egg slightly and add milk, salt, pepper and celery seed.

    Pour over casserole. (At this point, casserole can be covered with plastic wrap and stored in the refrigerator for the day.)

    Bake at 375° for 40 minutes.
