- 2 Tbsp. sweet butter
- 1 large onion, peeled and sliced thin
- 3 c. beef or chicken broth
- salt and pepper to taste
- Italian bread, sliced and toasted
- 3/4 c. Gruyere cheese, grated
Directions

1Melt butter in saucepan.

2Add onion and saute 10 to 15 minutes until lightly browned.

3Add broth, salt and pepper and bring to a boil.

4Place bread in bottom of ovenproof casserole.

5Sprinkle with 1/2 of cheese.

6Pour soup over bread and sprinkle with remaining cheese.

7Bake in 400° oven for 35 minutes.
