Ingredients

  • 1 1/3 c. butter
  • 2/3 c. water
  • 1 c. sugar
  • 1/2 tsp. salt
  • 1 1/3 c. chopped pecans
  • 1/2 tsp. soda
  • 1 c. semi-sweet chocolate pieces or 4 oz. broken milk chocolate bars
  • 1 extra c. finely chopped pecans

    In 2-quart saucepan, combine first 4 ingredients. Cook over low heat, stirring constantly, until it boils. Cook, without stirring, to 236° or soft ball. Add chopped pecans; continue cooking to 290°, soft-crack stage, stirring constantly. Remove form heat. Mixture changes to a deep caramel color. Stir in soda. Turn out onto greased cookie sheet. Spread until even. Immediately spread with chocolate pieces. Spread chocolate over top as it melts. Sprinkle with 1 cup chopped pecans. Cool. Break into pieces.
